Amsoil’s Findings on Interceptor Oil in Ski-Doo® Rotax® E-TEC® Engines

As previously explained, Bombardier (BRP) said that Amsoil Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil is not only unsuitable for Ski-Doo® Rotax® E-TEC® Engines, but actually causes damage to the engines. BRP performed a test that showed scuffing a piston that was allegedly lubricated with Interceptor. Amsoil responded, and said that not only was Bombardier wrong, but that the test was flawed. Amsoil went on to do its own tests to show that Interceptor is just as good as, if not better, than the oil Bombardier recommends for these types of engines.

Amsoil’s Test Objective

Amsoil’s test simulated real-world conditions through an extreme dynamometer test. Unlike in Bombardier’s test, the snowmobiles used were not altered in any way. The objective of the test was to compare Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil to XPS-2 Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil in their ability to protect against deposits and engine wear in a Rotax E-TEC 800R-equipped snowmobile. In addition, the test compared the detergency and lubricity properties using ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) testing.

The ultimate objective of the test was to demonstrate that Interceptor not only meets but exceeds the high-performance requirements of snowmobiles under severe working conditions.

The test was completed in March 2012, using oils that were available to consumers at the time.

Extreme Dynamometer Test

Each candidate oil was installed in a 2012 BRP Ski-Doo Renegade X snowmobile. Prior to each test, the Land and Sea DYNOmite™ was calibrated along with the snowmobile. Then the engine was refreshed with new cylinders, pistons, wrist pins, cylinder heads, piston rings, and wrist pin bearings using authorized BRP engine-building practices and replacement parts. Each part was measured prior to the test, to compare to the final results. Both candidates then underwent 50 hours of engine dyno testing, with breaks to represent refueling and overnight down-time to better simulate actual conditions.

Testing included break-in, idle time, and full- and partial-throttle operation. Maximum rpm was used repeatedly throughout the procedure.

Once the 50 hours of running was completed, each engine was broken down and rated by an ASTM calibrated rater. Each set of components (intake ports and cylinders, piston rings, piston skirt,etc) received merit ratings based on defects, wear, and other distress. The results for Interceptor were compared against XPS-2 results.

Results

  • Scuffing was completely prevented by both oils.
  • Piston ring deposits rated a perfect 10 on both oils, which mens that both effectively prevented sticking.
  • Interceptor Oil earned high ratings for undercrown and piston crown deposits. XPS-2 rated high for piston crown deposits only.
  • Interceptor limited wear on wrist pins and bearings to provide high levels of protection.
  • Both oils tested showed strong cleanliness properties in preventing excessive cylinder head deposits.
  • Interceptor and XPS-2 both prevented intake port deposits and cylinder bore wear. Ratings were high.
  • XPS-2 and Interceptor effectively prevented deposits and blockage in exhaust ports.
  • Both oils showed strong cleanliness properties in preventing varnish and hard carbon deposits on exhaust power valves.
  • Cylinder liner wear and cylinder head deposits was effectively prevented by both oils. XPS-2 earned a high rating.
  • Interceptor and XPS-2 perfectly prevented ring sticking to the top ring and piston skirt scuffing. Interceptor earned a high rating for land ring deposits and piston varnish.

Conclusion

Using real-world conditions, Amsoil’s test shows that Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil exceeds performance requirements for high-performance DFI powersports, including those in Ski-Doo® Rotax® E-TEC® engines. Based on these results, Amsoil guarantees that Interceptor is an effective lubricant for Rotax E-TEC engines and can safely and effectively replace the more expensive XPS-2 Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil and will not void BRP’s warranty.

Amsoil also offers a limited warranty for the use of Interceptor oil in Rotax engines.
